What Home Health Care is Covered by Medicare

Medicare covers a range of home health care services for eligible beneficiaries. To qualify for Medicare coverage, the following conditions generally apply:

  1. You must be under the care of a doctor and have a plan of care established.
  2. You must require skilled nursing care on an intermittent basis or physical, speech, or occupational therapy.
  3. You must be homebound, meaning it is difficult for you to leave your home without assistance due to illness or injury.

Here are some of the home health care services covered by Medicare:

  1. Skilled nursing care: Medicare covers skilled nursing services provided by a registered nurse (RN) or licensed practical nurse (LPN). This includes wound care, injections, monitoring of vital signs, and other skilled services.
  2. Physical therapy: Medicare covers physical therapy services to help you regain or improve your mobility, strength, balance, and flexibility.
  3. Occupational therapy: Medicare covers occupational therapy services to help you regain or improve your ability to perform daily activities such as dressing, bathing, and eating.
  4. Speech therapy: Medicare covers speech therapy services to help you improve or regain your speech and language skills, as well as swallowing abilities.
  5. Medical social services: Medicare covers medical social services provided by a social worker, such as counseling, assistance with community resources, and long-term planning.
  6. Home health aide services: Medicare covers home health aide services on a part-time or intermittent basis. These services include personal care, assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs), and light housekeeping.

It’s important to note that Medicare typically covers 100% of the approved amount for home health care services if you meet the eligibility criteria. However, certain limitations and conditions may apply, so it’s advisable to consult with Medicare or your healthcare provider for specific details based on your situation.
